Rafael Peralta • Sergeant • The United States Marines • Served 2000–2004

A letter from Sgt. Rafael Peralta, written to his younger brother, arrived the day after his death. It read, “Be proud of me, bro. I’m going to do something I always wanted to do. You should be proud of being an American. Our father came to this country and became a citizen because it was the right place for our family to be.”

While in the Marines, Sgt. Rafael Peralta became a U. S. citizen. The war, Iraqi Freedom, had been officially over on November 15, 2004, when Sgt. Peralta volunteered to go out with an assault team in Fallouja, Iraq. After becoming injured, Sgt. Peralta used his last bit of strength to reach out and pull a grenade into his body. His heroic act left four other Marines with only minor injuries. Later that night, Cpl. Richard A. Mason told the
company, “Tell your kids and your grandkids what Sgt. Peralta did for you and the other Marines today.”

Una carta del Sargento Rafael Peralta, escrita a su hermano menor, llegó el
día después de su muerte. La carta decía,“Esté orgulloso de mí, hermano. Voy a hacer algo que siempre quise hacer. Debes estar orgulloso de ser
americano. Nuestro padre vino a este país y se volvió ciudadano porque era
el lugar correcto para que viviera
nuestra familia.”

Cuando estaba en la Marina, el Sargento Rafael Peralta se volvió ciudadano americano. La guerra, Iraqi Freedom (Libertad Iraqui), había terminado oficialmente el 15 de noviembre de 2004, cuando el Sargento Peralta se ofreció como voluntario para ir con un equipo de ataque en Fallouja, Iraq. Después que lo hirieron, el Sargento Peralta usó la poca fuerza que le quedaba para estirarse y mover una granada hacia su cuerpo. Su acto heroico permitió que otros cuatro marinos quedaran sólo con heridas leves. Más tarde esa misma noche, Cabo Richard A. Mason le dijo a la compañía, “Cuéntenle a sus hijos y a sus nietos lo que el Sargento Peralta hizo por ustedes y por los otros marinos hoy.”
