David Glasgow Farragut
• Admiral • US Navy • Served 1862 – 1864 |
|
David Glasgow Farragut was born James Glasgow Farragut
near Knoxville, Tennessee on July 6, 1801. James hailed from a seafaring family, following in his father Jorge Farragut’s footsteps. David’s entry into the Navy came by way of David Porter, a close family friend and guardian whose name he later took. David went to sea with his adoptive father at the age of eight, went into combat at age eleven and commanded a
vessel at age twelve!
Although born and raised in the South, Farragut joined the Union and moved his family north. In 1866, Farragut became the first person in the history of the U.S. Navy awarded the rank of Admiral after leading his men to victory in Mobile Bay. A statue of Admiral Farragut still stands in our nation’s capital in Farragut Square.
Profiles of Rear Admiral George E. Mayer and the Honorable William Navas, Jr. can be found here.
