The Chinese New Year's Cake (Nian Gao)
Various types of the New Year's Cakes contain red dates, or peanuts. This one is coated in seasame seeds. Nian Gao is always served throughout the New year's celebration. It is believed that the higher the cake rises, the better the year will be!

  • INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 4-1/2 cups sweet (glutinous) rice flour
  • 2-1/2 cups packed dark brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • sesame seeds

  • INSTRUCTIONS:

    Heat vegetable oil and brown sugar together, stirring constantly until the sugar is melted. Remove from heat, and allow to cool slightly.

    Combine the rice flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir the cooled brown sugar mixture into the flour mixture.

    Drop batter by the spoonful into a bowl filled with sesame seeds, turning dough balls to coat completely.

    Place balls into a steamer, cover, and steam for 50-60 minutes.
