Preheat oven to 400 degrees F
Using the back of a spoon, make an indentation in the center of each slice of bread (where the egg will rest) and place bread on a baking sheet.
Spread butter on the edges of the bread that won't be covered by the egg.
Break one egg into the indentation of each slice of bread.
Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
Bake for 13 to 15 minutes. Sprinkle shredded cheese over the top.
Bake another 2 minutes until cheese has melted and egg is completely cooked.
